I have been a neurofeedback provider since 2007. I had the good fortune to be trained by Genie Bodenhamer-Davis, a legend in the field of neurofeedback and the person that wrote the practice standards for BCIA certification. I then carried out 3 years of research utilizing neurofeedback with third graders identified as ADHD, demonstrating the efficacy of neurofeedback as an intervention.
In the beginning, like most of the other providers, I sent quantitative EEG (qEEG) data out to a third party, that many providers use, to be artifacted, analyzed, and have treatment protocols recommended. I wasn’t happy with what I was getting back, so I looked for better options.
That led me to get trained in 2009 to perform my own qEEGs and complete two years of supervision in the art of writing treatment protocols and plans that were dramatically more effective than what I had been using previously. This means that the entire process at Neurotherapy Center of Houston is in-house.
The neurofeedback community has experienced a surge of growth in recent years with many new clinicians entering the field. To quickly “jump in”, many are buying packaged systems that use software to recommend protocols and require little knowledge or experience from the clinician. Unfortunately, there is no shortcut to clinical experience.
